The NorthGeography: The north had many differences in geography. Such as the North had 4 distinct seasons. The soiled in differed in places in the North in some places they had rocky thin soil. Other places had fertile, rich soil good for planting and farming. Many fast moving rivers and large forests.
Economy: The economy in the North was based on business and manufacturing. The North was more advanced with factories, the assembly line, and steam powered machines. But farming was also a big part of the economy but compared to the South it was very small. Transportation: The north had very well developed transportation systems due to the large population and manufacturing. There were a variety of forms such as roads systems, canals, steamboats, and 20,000 miles of railroads. The canals and steamboat systems were mainly used as a way to transport a vast amount of goods across the country. Society: The northerners did not believe in slave labor, or slaves they believed in free blacks. They were the free states. Because the North had more job opportunities and were slave Free states, the area grew to be a lot larger than the Southern states. The Northern states also relied on a free labor system, which was available to all immigrants, whites, and blacks. |
The SouthGeography: The
South had mild winters, and hot humid summers. Though throughout the region,
the soil was rich and fertile great for planting vast amounts of vegetables.
Economy: In the South agriculture was the major focus of the economy and revolved around cash crops. Theses cash crops were grown on very large plantations or farms usually growing only one kind of crop in large rural areas. Because of the large amounts of labor it took to take care of the large plantations the Southern states economically relied on slave labor, or the plantation system. Transportation: In the South compared to the North it was not very advanced. There were less than 10,000 miles of railroads, no canals, few roads, and water transportation was the main method of transporting goods. The Mississippi River was the most traveled waterway. Society: The society in the south was less diverse, and was instead more a rural, populated mainly by small scale farmers, who owned few slaves, and large scale farmers with large amounts of slaves. Plantation owners held the majority of the economic, political, and social power. The slaves on the plantations had vitually no say in how anything was runned. But the slaves were a big part of the population size. |
Predict how these differences might contribute to sectionalism?
Sectionalism means an undivided interest or passion to a local area of land. These differences formed the different opinions in the eyes of the people. So for a people to become more divided on these opinons and only stand with the people that have the same opinions. It was not a suprise that setionalism happened between the North and South especially on the dispute of slavery and non- slavery.
