Pretend that you have been asked to write a speech about your favorite hero. Who would you choose? What makes that person a hero?

I would chose my parents as my heros because they are just wonderful peole in my eyes. I think what makes a hero is that they try to do everything that is good for everyone except themselves. They also help everyone that is less fortunite and is a good example in peoples eyes.
Important People of the Civil War
Leaders of the NorthAbraham Lincoln: Grew up as a poor farmer but educated himself by reading
everything he could find. He grew very tall and thin. He was patient,
thoughtful, and tolerant of others. He was an important part of the Union as he
wavered his goal of preserving it.
Ulysses S. Grant: After much trial and error Lincoln appointed Grant which was the end to his search for finding a good Union leader. Irvin McDowell: He was appointed the General or leader at the beginning of the civil war but then was later taken from his post because he didn't know fight back to the strong Southern army. George B. McClellan: A west point grad, and also took McDowell's place as commander and chief of the North during the Civil War. But because he was not aggressive enough he was also relieved from his post by Lincoln George C. Meade: Was appointed the new leader of the Union army. He proved himself at the Battle of Gettysburg, but the loses were heavy. So Lincoln still searched for a good leader. Ambrose Burnside: Was appointed the new union army leader after Meade was released from his post. He was also relieved from his post after the terrible defeat at Fredericksburg. Joseph Hooker: Hooker was the next Union leader after Burnside got released from his post. He was named “fighting Joe" . Despite his wonderful personality he was humiliated at the battle of Chancellorsville, and was later relieved from his command. William T. Sherman: Was one of the most able generals and supporter of Grant. He and Grant were a great team that lead the Union and eventually forced Robert E. Lee to surrender. |
Leaders of the SouthJefferson Davis:
He was the president of the Confederate States of America
and led them in the Civil War.
Robert E. Lee: Was the confederate general and came from one of the most distinguished Virginia families. Lee opposed slavery and to secession he was asked to lead the Union but he declined because he could not fight against his native Virginia. P.G.T. Beauregard: While stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, he gave the order to fire on Fort Sumter, the first shots of the Civil War. Albert S. Johnston: A Texan, considered the best soldier. He was the second highest- ranking Confederate officer. Lee also gave him command of the western part of the confederacy. He had to keep the Union from taking the Mississippi river. He was later shot in the leg, but kept on fighting to later then bleed to death. Thomas Stonewall Jackson: Was general and commander at the first major battle of the war. He was one of the best and victorious soldiers. But at the battle of Chancellorsville his own men mortally wounded Jackson. This was another big blow to the Confederacy and to Lee personally. J.E.B. Stuart: : He led the Cavalry corps of Lee’s army. Was called the eyes of the army because of his amazing talent in spying. During the battle of the Wilderness he was mortally wounded not long after his death the South surrendered. Nathan Bedford Forrest: : He was considered one of America’s greatest tactical minds. Rose from private to general because of his military genius. Both Grant and Sherman feared him. George Pickett: Commanded an infantry division for Lee. When Lee commanded him to charge out at the Battle of Gettysburg he lost almost half of his men he was so mad at Lee he never talked to him again. |

Other Influential Leaders
John Brown: Was considered a hero in the North because all of his large actions towards the South that gave the North great inspiration. He killed proslavery men and also tried to capture some of the officers from the Southern side. He was found and was told to surrender he was put on trial and was hung.
Harriet Beecher Stowe: published Uncle Tom's Cabin which lit both sides of the nation on fire. She told storys of a slave that was beaten to death by his master. Harriet wrote the most influencial book during the time of war to help the North know what they are fighting to save.
Dred Scott: was a slave that after his master died sued the ife for saying that she owned him still despite that he was a free man for 4 years. The court did not agree with him so he started to tell his story to the North.

They all had to be tough and also had to be able to be mean and yell at the troops. They also had to have a good strategy.

Which side seemed to have the more stable leadership?
The South because they didn't have to change their leaders so many time so there wasn't any confusion.
